About Us

La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. was founded here at the University of California, Berkeley on April 20th, 2011. Our chapter was begun by eight young men that were seeking to build a unique space for themselves, the community, it's leaders, and others that they could call their own. They accomplished the goal of bridging the University, the first-generation student, and communities of color in the founding of a chapter of LUL.

We came together to give birth to a chapter  that would not only seek to address the needs of first generation students of color, but those that who undergo struggles of oppression. The Berkeley Colony chapter has promoted academic excellence, cultural awareness, community service, and proactive leadership while establishing itself as a part of both the University and Berkeley community.

The Hermanos of our chapter have progressed significantly both during and since their undergraduate years at the University. We have achieved academically, have lead multiple organizations, have been recognized by the University and Berkeley communities for countless hours of community service, and have consistently maintained a focus on the uplift and support of disenfranchised communities.

As we progress towards growth, the Berkeley Colony has retained an emphasis on academic achievement, community service, cultural awareness, and leadership building both within and outside of our organization. Our legacy, as a part of the national movement of La Unidad Latina, continues to this day.

We, the hermanos of La Fraternidad at the Berkeley Colony, are eager to continue La Unidad Latina's success as the strongest and most active national  fraternity.

We hope that your visit here is informative and helpful.

Who We Are

La Unidad Latina has taken on the role to meet the needs of the Latino community through cultural awareness, community service, and the promotion of Latino culture and its diverse peoples. We carry a great responsibility as current and future leaders, not only within our own Hermandad, but also within enterprises such as politics, finance, business, education, medicine, law and cultural outreach.

Our History

La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated was established on February 19, 1982 in order to address the shortcomings of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the needs of Latino students in higher education. Founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated primarily seeks to take a leadership role in meeting the needs of the Latino community through cultural awareness, community service, and promotion of the Latino culture and people.

Since its inception, La Unidad Latina has maintained a firm commitment to the empowerment and betterment of all Latinos. To accomplish this goal, La Fraternidad addresses various key areas of concern to the Latino community, beginning with a concentration on academic achievement, community service, and cultural awareness.

Within the academic realm, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated continually strives to increase the representation of Latino faculty and students in higher education. Realizing that recruitment is only half of the solution, La Fraternidad places strong emphasis on academic programs that aid in the retention, guidance and improvement of Latino students in institutions of higher learning.

La Unidad Latina is committed to developing its members and peers into mature, intelligent, socially active, and culturally conscious individuals, who, via mutual support, can excel academically and professionally. La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated is looking for individuals with vision, determination, pride, and a commitment to accomplish the goals it has set for itself.
